Holiday Gala’s and Old St. Nick

Wonderland of TreesThe holiday season offers each of us a chance to reminisce, connect with family & friends and find joy in our traditions.  One of my much anticipated “traditions” has been to visit the Holland Land Office Museum to see (and sometimes participate in) their “Wonderland of Trees.”

Since the early 1800’s, the Holland Land Office Building has watched over the holiday celebrations of Batavians. Just imagine, if it could talk, the stories the building could tell! This year will be no exception. On November 16th, starting at 7:00pm, people near and far will converge on the museum for the “Grand Opening Gala” of the” Wonderland of Trees.” The place will be bubbling with conversation and music, courtesy of Don Bouchard on the guitar and Jeff Fisher on the piano. Savory treats will be catered by the D&R Depot Restaurant, a silent auction will give you an opportunity to bid on that perfect gift and they’ll have a raffle so you can test your luck. The cost is $15 per person or $25 for a couple/family.

“Home for the Holidays” is this year’s theme. Just the thought brings to mind family gatherings, sleigh rides and caroling at friends’ homes.  I can’t wait to see what creative trees and wreaths I’ll discover when I wander the beautifully decorated rooms. I always come away with something new that I use in my own celebrations.

Of course, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without the magic of the head elf – Jolly Old St. Nicholas. The children will have their own Children’s Gala on December 15th at 10am, where they will have the opportunity to tell Santa what’s on their “wish” list. They’ll also be fascinated by Batavian, Jay Gsell’s, collection of antique Lionel trains. These miniature wonders will be displayed in the East Wing during the holiday season.  The event will have a minimal charge, and will be filled with children’s activities.

If you aren’t lucky enough to make it to either “Gala,” please make sure to visit. The entrance fee is $4 for adults and $1 for children, but you can’t put a price on the “holiday” feeling you get when you discover a tree that reminds you of one you had as a child.
